Flight Incursion (Levels 3 – 6)

Theme: Design & Technology – Engineering
Level: 3 – 6

Students will explore design technologies used in flight. They will investigate how forces and the properties of materials affect the behaviour of a flying object.

Activities

  • Identify things that fly.
  • Identify the differences between rockets and planes
  • Identify forces in play during flight.
  • Test air pressure.
  • Make a simple rocket model and test thrust.
  • Change the shape of the rocket model to observe what happens to its flight path.
  • Students design their own simple flying machine and observe a number of variables that affect the flight path.
  • Explore how lowering the pressure can move objects.
  • Investigate the movement of a battery-operated propeller.
  • Launch a rubber stopper using chemical energy.
